West Will Mourn Seamus Brennan 'A man of vision'

Press Release 9th July 2008

The West on Track community campaign extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late Séamus Brennan, T.D., the former Minister of Transport, who played a key part in bringing about the redevelopment of the Western Rail Corridor, and many other important and forward-looking national transport initiatives.

Mr. Brennan was a decent and honourable man who had the vision and foresight to take a national view of the development of transport infrastructure in Ireland and who quickly recognised that the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor would play a major part in the future development of the whole western region.

As Minister for Transport, he listened carefully to the views of community and political leaders across the region and in 2004 he travelled in person to the west to examine the situation at first hand. He later established the WRC Expert Working Group under the chairmanship of Mr. Pat McCann, as a result of which the Western Rail Corridor is currently being developed in line with the National Spatial Strategy as part of Transport 21. Sadly, he was not destined to see the first stages of that vision come to reality but the people of the west who will benefit enormously from that initiative for years to come will warmly remember him.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
