Oranmore Park and Ride takes step forward

Galway Independent - Wednesday 5th April 2006

by Keith Lynch

The Oranmore Park and  Ride took a step forward recently with the identification of two possible sites for the commuter station.

Galway County Council is considering whether the station should be placed at Gaurraun, in South Oranmore or at a site alongside the new IDA technology park.

The Park 'n' Ride would lead to a regular commuter style train running between Galway and Oranmore.

Currently there is no time frame in place regarding the choosing of a site.

The next Galway County Council meeting is at the end of April but it is unlikely that a decision will be made before that. However, Councillor Jim Cuddy said the identification of the sites was 'crucial'. 'I'm glad one of them is at the site I proposed (IDA technology park). I think it makes an awful lot of sense to locate it there long term.

'The existing station is Oranmore just cannot be opened again. It's right on the N18 and there is no parking space near it. So if you put the new station at the IDA park, you have your parking right and you're in close proximity to the new technology park.'
